The 5th Edition of Malindi Red Carpet went down last weekend at Vintage Lounge culminating with the crowning of Miss Malindi 2019. Aimed at creating awareness to youths against early pregnancy, the event was attended by the who is who in the fashion industry, including Sabrina of Nairobi Diaries among others.
I had a moment with Fanice Ounza, the winner of Miss Malindi 2019 to talk about her journey and her win. Fanice is a model, singer, artist and aspiring actress. Growing up, she wanted to be an air hostess, a dream she hasn’t given up yet.
Her love for fashion and beauty made the 21year old model to start a boutique business in Malindi with her twin sister Felicia, where they design and sell designer clothes, weaves and African jewellery.
Here is her story:
Who is Fanice Ounza?
I am a model, dancer, singer, artist and aspiring actress. Born and raised in Mombasa in a family of 4, my mum moved to Malindi in December 2016 after retirement. My twin sister and I helped mum in setting up and running her restaurant business.
When did you first love modeling?
Growing up I wanted to be an air hostess. But I loved being in front of people and cat-walking from an early age. I have always wanted to be on the red carpet but never got the opportunity. But I have always wanted to do this.
So, was this your first time stepping on the red carpet?
How did you learn about the event?
I saw the post online and on a WhatsApp group
Being your first time, did you feel nervous while on the red carpet?
At first yes, but after the first walk I felt more comfortable and confident.
According to you what was the best part of the show?
Hearing people shouting my name cheering me up. And the crowning of course.
Did you ever think of being the winner?
Honestly, I saw myself winning this.
What’s your response to critics, particularly those who think you did not deserve the win?
I don’t respond to critics. And if I do, I just smile.
Not many people know that you are an artist as well. Have you given up on that completely?
I love art, though it’s been a while since I drew. But I haven’t given up on it.

Besides your quest for modeling, what are some of the things you’re working on right now?
Right now am trying to focus on the art and maybe venture into doing music.
What drives Fanice?
The desire to be the best version of myself everyday.
Favorite place you would love to visit?
I have no favorite place, but I would love to travel around the world
What is success to you?
Success is when I achieve what I have been pursuing.
One person you appreciate?
My mum. She is the reason am here.
